2, 3 Market Square, Stonehaven

1 Market Square in Stonehaven is a mid-19th century, two-storey and attic, three-bay flatted dwelling featuring a pair of original shops at ground level. It is located on a corner site and completes an irregular terrace. The building is constructed of stugged ashlar with finely droved margins, and it has a first-floor cill course and eaves course.

The northern elevation is symmetrical, with a central timber door that has a deep plate glass fanlight. The flanking bays contain shops, each with an in-canted part-glazed door (the door to No 1 includes an encaustic-tiled doorstep), a plate glass fanlight, and an outer fixed display window beneath a fascia with a dentilled cornice and carved console brackets. The first floor has three evenly spaced windows, and there are canted polygonal-roofed dormers over the outer bays, flanking two small rooflights.

The eastern elevation, facing Allardice Street, features a gabled design with two fixed display windows at ground level beneath a plain fascia. There is an enlarged window to the left on the first floor and a small projecting rectangular stone in the gablehead.

The windows are timber sash and case with a 4-pane glazing pattern, although some have out-of-character trickle vents. There is a top-opening window on the eastern side. The building has cavetto corniced stacks with polygonal cans, ashlar-coped skews with flat skewputts, and cast-iron downpipes, which are part square-section, located at the centre and right, recessed into the stonework.
