Description

9 Market Square in Stonehaven is a tall, two-storey and attic, three-bay terraced shop and flats, rebuilt around 1875. It features stone-finialled pedimented windowheads and is known as the birthplace of Robert William Thomson. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, with some areas stugged, and includes cill courses and architraved openings above ground level. The first floor has decorative margins and incised windowheads, with stone mullions and stop-chamfered arrises.

The principal elevation is symmetrical above ground. On the right side at ground level, there is a central shop entrance framed by stone dividing piers and a bracketed corniced fascia to the right. A panelled timber door with a plate glass fanlight is located immediately to the left of centre, featuring a brass plaque that reads: 'THE BIRTHPLACE OF ROBERT WILLIAM THOMSON / THE INVENTOR OF THE PNEUMATIC TYRE / BORN 29TH JUNE 1822 / DIED 8TH MARCH 1873'. To the left, there is another shop with a door on the right and a fixed display window on the left.

The first floor and attic have a single window in the centre and bipartite windows in the flanking bays, with the attic windows featuring blind quatrefoils in their pediments, which break the wallhead into the first floor. The glazing patterns consist of four-pane and plate glass in timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slates and has a terracotta ridge. There are cavetto-coped ashlar stacks with a full complement of polygonal cans, as well as ashlar-coped skews adorned with decorative skewputts and finials.
