Description

The drinking fountain on Tay Street in Newport-On-Tay, designed by Walter Macfarlane & Co and dated 1882, is a substantial canopied cast-iron structure with a Moorish design, prominently located. It features two eight-sided concrete stone steps leading to a dais and a concrete-covered plinth. The fountain is supported by eight columns with chamfered bases, which have foliate detailing at the base and capital. These columns support eight arches adorned with scallop edging. Above each arch, there are round plaques decorated with herons and stags, inscribed with the words "KEEP THE PAVEMENT DRY." A plaque on the east side is inscribed "THE GIFT OF MRS BLYTH MARTIN 1882." Stylized creatures are positioned between the plaques, and the fountain has a ribbed domed roof with traceried metal featuring floral designs. The fountain is painted cream, with the plaques and capitals in red, the creatures and roof ribs in gold, the column bases in brown, and the floral detail above the capitals in green and red. There is a redundant replacement water pipe in the center with a drain set into the concrete. The fountain is built upon a stone base and is surrounded by plain seven-sided cast-iron railings with an arrowhead motif. There are no railings to the east, but there are low stone entrance piers with shouldered bases, chamfered arrises, and flower details on the street front and inner face. Flanking railings connect to identical terminating stone piers.
