Description

This drinking fountain, dated 1879, is located on the south side of High Street in Cheadle. It is constructed of stone with granite details and features a stepped circular plinth. The fountain has a triangular plan that rises to a dome surbase, which includes round arch-headed niches and gadrooned drinking bowls on each face. Granite pilasters at the corners extend through the dome, topped with urns. A second rise, designed in an aedicular style, springs from the lower dome and leads to a moulded frieze and heavily dentilled pediments, which are capped by another dome featuring a large urn finial. The upper faces of the fountain have inset plaques, one of which is inscribed: "THE GIFT OF/SARAH BOURNE/JOHN COLCLOUGH BOURNE/ A.D. 1879".
