Description
77 and 79 High Street is a house that has been converted into shops. It dates from the 17th century and has undergone early and mid-19th century alterations. The building features a timber frame, with some parts replaced by rendered brickwork that is painted to imitate timber framing. The ground floor has close studding on a rendered plinth, while the first floor displays a lozenge pattern that continues into the gables and dormers, which have quatrefoils near the tops. The roofs are tiled, and there is a brick ridge stack located to the left of the center and set behind the entrance.
The building has a hall and cross wing plan, is two storeys tall with an attic, and has a five-window front divided into five structural bays. There are two gabled dormer windows on the left and center, featuring timber chamfered mullioned and transomed windows with five lights. To the right, there is a projecting gable, largely from the 19th century, adorned with quatrefoil-patterned coving and a casement attic light. A smaller 19th-century gable is located at the extreme right. The ground and first floors have glazing bar sash windows, with tripartite windows on the left, center, and inner right that correspond to the dormer and main gable positions. A 20th-century shop front is located under the main gable and at the left end, which has 19th-century small pane windows. The entrance is situated between the dormers and features a semi-circular hood and a 17th-century boarded door within a moulded surround.
