Description
The Glenburn Hotel, located at 6 James Square in Crieff, was built in 1889. This three-storey and attic hotel features three bays and includes shops on the ground floor, set within an irregular terrace. The building is constructed of bull-faced stone with contrasting ashlar dressings. It has a cornice at the ground floor, as well as cill and eaves courses. The windows are corniced, and there are decorative stone balustrades and stone mullions.
The south elevation is symmetrical, with two traditional shop fronts on the ground floor that are divided and closed by paired console brackets. The shop on the left has an in-canted part-glazed door, a deep plate glass fanlight, a tessellated step, and flanking fixed display windows supported by slender cast-iron columns with Corinthian capitals at the inner angles, along with fluted stone pilasters and a fascia. The shop on the right has a similar layout but features timber detailing and a multi-pane fanlight strip with a door on the outer right, all topped with a full-width cornice. Each floor above has a central window similar to those below, leading to a prominent shouldered wallhead stack with a datestone that may bear the initials 'JAH'. The outer bays have canted tripartite windows with a balustrade, which leads to a small bipartite window below a narrow light in a steep gablehead topped with a thistle finial.
The windows are fitted with plate glass glazing in timber sash and case frames, with a four-pane over plate glass glazing pattern for the casement windows in the gableheads. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are cavetto-coped ashlar stacks with some chimney cans. A square-section cast-iron downpipe features decorative fixings at the ground level.
Inside, the hotel includes a timber-balustered dog-leg staircase, decorative cornices, panelled shutters, and a timber fire surround. Room No. 5 has a tessellated floor.
