Description

The Waverley Hotel, located at 7 James Square in Crieff, dates from around 1885. This four-storey, two-bay hotel features a shop on the ground floor and is designed with Jacobean gables. The exterior is constructed of bull-faced red ashlar, accented with contrasting quoins, margins, and pilaster quoins. Notable architectural details include cornices on the ground and second floors, as well as a deep dividing band and stone mullions.

On the south elevation, there is a traditional shop at the tall ground floor, which has an in-canted two-leaf part-glazed door with a decorative pediment at the center. Flanking the door are fixed display windows supported by slender columns with Corinthian capitals at the inner angles and outer pilasters. To the outer left, there is a six-panelled timber door with a small-pane oculus above and an additional pilaster to the left. This entire section is topped with a consoled cornice. The first and second floors above feature two wide-centre canted windows, with a dividing band displaying the words 'WAVERLEY' and 'HOTEL' in plain lettering, all topped by stone balustrades. The attic or third floor has keystoned semicircles above the bipartite windows in the gables, which are capped with semicircular features.

The windows throughout the building have a combination of four-pane and plate glass glazing patterns set in timber sash and case frames. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks with cans, as well as ashlar-coped skews with moulded skewputts. The cast-iron downpipes are adorned with decorative rainwater hoppers and fixings.

Inside, the hotel features decorative plasterwork cornices and a timber-balustered staircase. There is also a black marble fire surround located on the first floor.
