Description

The Smollet Fountain, located on Main Street in Alexandria, was designed by Anderson & McLeod in 1870 and underwent renovation and cleaning in 1995. This Ruskinian Gothic fountain is shaped like a mercat cross and features three tiers. It has a blocky quatrefoil-plan base and a pedestal base, with squat grey granite corner columns topped with sandstone floreate capitals. The fountain is adorned with a richly-carved sandstone parapet, grotesque waterspouts, and a SA monogram. Each side of the fountain has a sandstone feature and an inscribed panel that reads: "erected in honour of Alexander Smollett of Bonhill by his feuers and tenants and other friends in the county to perpetuate his name as a kind and just landlord and in appreciation of valuable services rendered to the county both in the local courts and as its representative in parliament AD 1870." The fountain rises in two stages, with a clustered banded pink granite shaft that supports the sandstone parapet, which features griffin guttae. The structure is topped with a faceted column and a lead pelican finial.

Surrounding the fountain are modern cast-iron railings with arrowhead designs. Additionally, there are concrete bases with cast-iron lamp standards that support modern high-Victorian style lanterns.
