Description
The lodge, built in 1902 by James Miller, serves as an entrance to Christie Park, a public park in Alexandria. It is designed in a Scottish 17th-century revival style, forming an L-shape with a single-storey wing at the rear adjoining a modern storage building. The lodge is constructed of stugged, squared, and snecked sandstone ashlar with ashlar margins and dressings, featuring a base course and crowstepped gables.
The east elevation has a gable facing the outer left side, with a canted window at ground level and an ashlar blocking course. Above this is a window with a semicircular broken pediment. A balustraded porch, supported by a single corner Doric column, is located in the re-entrant angle to the right, with a half-glazed door. A two-bay wing extends to the right, central ground-floor window, and two symmetrically disposed pedimented dormerheads above. A plaque is centrally positioned on the wall, inscribed: "This park was gifted to the inhabitants of the parish of Bonhill by John Christie Esq of John Orr Ewing & Co Alexandria 5th July 1909."
The south elevation consists of a three-bay, two-story block with a pend door and a balustraded link block connecting to a gabled single-story wing on the outer left. A roll-moulded window is at ground level to the right of a tower, with a dormerheaded window above. A tall wallhead stack breaks the eaves at the centre of the wall. Further to the left is a gable with a small window at ground level and a tall stair window above, featuring an entablature. A roll-moulded door is situated to the left, with a balustraded wall connecting to the gable on the outer left and a window at centre. A tall stack is positioned to the right at the gable.
The north elevation features an advanced gabled block with a canted window at ground level and a window above. Recessed to the right is a single-story, three-bay block with a half-glazed door at the centre and flanking windows.
Most windows are uPVC, except for the single-story rear block, which retains 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered in grey slate with lead flashings. Tall, corniced wallhead stacks with circular cans are present. The interior was not inspected in 1995.
The boundary is marked by tall, banded piers with corniced caps and ball finials, a low pier buttress, and low squared and snecked sandstone rubble walls with ashlar triangulated coping. A cast-iron flat-arched gate is at the centre, with cast-iron railing piers featuring decorative crown finials and an armorial plaque. Flanking pedestrian gates are also present.
A drinking fountain is located to the southwest within the park. It has a square-plan cast-iron pedestal base on a concrete plinth, with semicircular drinking fountains on each side, decorative cast-iron panels above, a corniced top, and a small statuette.
