Description
Dean Park Primary School Annexe, located at 1 Main Street in Balerno, Edinburgh, was designed by Wardrop and Reid and built between 1877 and 1878, with later alterations and additions. This single-storey, L-shaped gabled primary school building features a lower staff-room wing to the northwest. At the center, there is a slated, louvered, and spired bell-cote. To the southwest, a flat-roofed library extension was added in 1956, and a toilet block was constructed to the east in 1962. There is also a small piend-roofed building to the east, which now serves as a nursery but has previously functioned as a working men's club, reading room, dinner hall, and kitchen. The main structure is built of red brick with yellow brick quoins and reveals, showcasing barge-boarded and bracketed eaves, segmental-arched openings, and tripartite windows on the main gables. The girls' entrance features a two-leaf timber door with a small-pane glazed fanlight set in a crenellated porch located in the re-entrant angle.
Inside, the central hall is top-lit and supported by balustered king-posts in the roof, with a glazed sliding partition leading to the northern classroom. The adjoining classrooms have small-pane glazed fanlights that provide borrowed light. The interior retains original timber tongue and groove panelling, built-in glazed cupboards, and other furniture, along with decorative cast iron ventilators. The windows are timber sash and case, featuring 6-pane upper sashes and 4-pane lower sashes. The roof has recently been re-slated and includes modern roof-lights.
