Description

The School Master's House at Deanpark Primary School, built in 1877 by Wardrop and Reid, is a two-storey, asymmetrical, gabled rectangular-plan building. It features red brick construction with yellow brick polychrome dressings and details, including yellow brick interlocking quoins and raised cills. The house has decorative bargeboards, projecting eaves, exposed rafters, and segmental-headed windows.

On the west elevation, the main entrance is a three-bay L-plan with a porch located in the re-entrant angle. The gabled bay is advanced to the outer right, with windows symmetrically arranged on both the ground and first floors. The longer block to the left has a window at both levels on the outer left side, with a bargeboarded gable that breaks the eaves over the first-floor window. The single-storey gabled porch at the re-entrant angle is slightly advanced beyond the line of the outer right gable and features a four-panelled door with a plate glass segmental-headed fanlight, along with a small window on the left return.

The east elevation has various openings and includes single-storey, gabled, rendered kitchen blocks that are advanced at the ground level. The south elevation displays a broad gable that breaks the eaves at the centre, with windows symmetrically placed on both the ground and first floors, while the outer right and left sides remain blank. A tall wallhead stack is located to the right of the gable. The north elevation also has a broad gable with windows symmetrically arranged at the ground and first floors in the centre, and a single-storey block recessed to the left.

The windows are four-pane sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate and features lead flashings, tall ridge and wallhead stacks, polychromatic details, concrete coping, advanced pilaster strips in yellow brick, and a string course.

The boundary walls and gatepiers consist of a low ashlar plinth wall with saddleback coping and round-headed ashlar gatepiers, along with a rubble wall with boulder coping on the north and south sides.
