Description
North Ness House, located in North Ness, Lerwick, dates from around 1820. It is a single-storey and attic, three-bay symmetrical house with gabled wings that project to the rear, forming an approximate U-plan. The south elevation is harled, while the side and rear elevations are made of harl-pointed rubble, with painted stone dressings.
The south elevation features a symmetrical design with a projecting gabled porch at the center. The porch has a boarded entrance door on the west side and a border-glazed six-pane timber fixed-light window in the gable. There is regular fenestration in the flanking bays, and dormers with harled gabled dormerheads break the eaves at the outer bays.
The west elevation has a two-bay gable with windows on the ground and first floor in the bay to the right. There is a modern cement-rendered porch that projects to the left.
The north (rear) elevation has a single window centered on the ground floor, with the flanking bays obscured by the projecting gabled wings. The right wing has been altered and modernized, while the left wing features a single window in the advanced section of the east elevation.
The east elevation is a two-bay gable that is mostly blank, except for a window on the first floor in the bay to the left. The house has four-pane timber sash and case windows, purple-grey slate roofs, and harled apex stacks that are coped with circular cans. The skew copes are cement-rendered with bracketed skewputts.
The boundary walls and gatepiers consist of a cement-rendered and lined rubble wall with a concrete triangular cope to the south. There is an entrance gate at the center, flanked by stugged and painted gatepiers topped with gabled caps. To the west, there is a random rubble boundary wall.
