Description
Collegehill House in Roslin dates back to 1660 and has undergone later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey, three-bay traditional L-plan house featuring a flat-roofed square-plan porch at the rear. The building is constructed from sandstone rubble, with a harled wing to the west and rough stone margins around the windows, which have raised cills on the harled block. The date of construction is inset above the lintel.
The north (entrance) elevation is asymmetrical and has four bays, with the outer left bay being harled. The right side features a three-bay group: a deep-set timber door with a three-light narrow rectangular fanlight above it is located in the central bay at ground level, accompanied by a later inscribed plaque to the right of the door. There is a non-aligned window above at the first floor, with a window in each bay flanking the central door. The harled bay on the outer left has a boarded door with a letterbox fanlight above it, centered at ground level, and a window above at the first floor.
The south (rear) elevation consists of two bays, with a gabled bay advanced to the outer left and a square-plan porch at the angle. The right side has a two-bay group with a window in each bay at ground level and a window centered between the bays at the first floor. There is a part-glazed and boarded door to the south of the added porch. The gabled bay on the outer left features a window at ground level offset to the right, a gablehead window also offset to the right above, and a gablehead stack.
The west (side) elevation is nearly symmetrical with three bays. There is a boarded door at ground level in the central bay, with a small window flanking it to the right, and a window above at the first floor. A gablehead stack is located above this bay. Each flanking bay has a window at both floors. The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with a 6-pane timber sash and case window in the gablehead. The roof is covered with red pantiles and has a grey slate easing course, with harled coped stacks on the east and west gableheads, and an offset stack to the left on the roof. The building features ashlar skews and cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen in 1996. There is also a boundary wall and gateway, which includes a pointed-arched pedestrian gateway adjoining the house to the east, along with high rubble boundary walls.
