Description

The Manse at 29 Manse Road in Roslin was built in 1832, with a later addition to the northwest and a garage to the southwest. This two-storey, symmetrical, three-bay manse has a rectangular plan. The principal elevation features stugged ashlar sandstone, while the rest of the building is made of squared sandstone rubble. Notable architectural details include raised, droved margins around the windows, a polished ashlar door surround, a base course, a band course between the ground and first floors, an eaves course, strip quoins on the central bay, and raised and channelled quoins.

On the southeast (principal) elevation, there is a raised corniced and consoled doorpiece in the slightly advanced central bay, featuring a timber panelled door with a two-light fanlight above. There is a single window at the first floor above the door, with additional windows at each floor in the bays to the left and right.

The northwest (rear) elevation is irregular with five bays. It includes a lean-to three-bay addition at ground level on the right, which has a modern door with a fanlight above in the left return. There is a stair window at the first floor in the central bay, a window in the first floor of the outer right bay, a ground floor window to the left of centre, and a non-aligned window at the first floor above it. There is also a ground floor window in the outer left bay, with a non-aligned window at the first floor above.

The southwest (side) elevation features a mono-pitch boarded garage with two-leaf, part-glazed boarded doors at ground level and a gablehead stack above. The northeast elevation is a blank wall with an ashlar coped gablehead stack.

The principal elevation has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while some modern glazing is present at the rear. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are ashlar coped gablehead stacks, ashlar skews, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
