Description

The Roslin Chapel Custodian's Offices, dating from the 18th century with later alterations and additions, is a 1.5-storey, 3-bay traditional rectangular-plan office. It features a lower single-storey, 2-bay addition set back to the left, along with a flat-roofed block at the angle and a wall with a pedestrian gateway to the right. The building is constructed of squared sandstone rubble, showcasing long and short surrounds to the openings, which include relieving arches and heavy block lintels, as well as droved long and short quoins.

On the north elevation, there is a window at ground level in the central bay, with a mutual lintel and cill block above it for the window on the first floor. To the right of the centre is a window that may have formerly been a door, and to the left of the centre is a boarded door. The addition to the left features a square-plan block with two-leaf boarded doors in the right bay and a boarded door in the left bay.

The south elevation is mostly blank, with only a small opening on the far left. The building includes 9-pane timber sash and case windows, 4-pane fixed windows, a red pantiled roof, ashlar skews, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

Surrounding the property is a high coped rubble boundary wall that encloses Rosslyn Chapel and the burial ground. There is a pedestrian gateway set to the west of the stable, featuring an architraved gateway with geometric carved decoration, a similarly decorated pediment with a carved fragment (likely from Rosslyn Castle) above, and a deep-set boarded door with decorative iron hinges.
