Description
Bewlie Orchard is an 18th-century, two-storey, three-bay laird's house that was extended around 1800 to five bays, with further alterations made in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of random rubble and was originally harl-pointed. It features windows and doors with roughly droved red sandstone margins, although some openings have been blocked, enlarged, or added in the 19th century. The roof is steeply pitched and was originally thatched, but it has since been replaced with a corrugated iron roof, while the original adzed A-frame roof timbers are still retained inside. The end stacks have thackstanes.
The front (southeast) elevation has five irregular bays, with a variety of glazing patterns, mostly consisting of four-pane sash and case windows. The second bay on the ground floor has been altered with a later 19th-century mullion and features 12-pane sash and case glazing in each light. There is a four-panel door at the fourth bay (in the later block) with a narrow rectangular six-pane fanlight above, and a window above that with modern plate glass sash and case glazing.
At the northeast end gable, there is a flat-roofed single-storey brick addition that has been rendered, which connects to a mid-19th-century gateway leading to the orchard.
The rear elevation has a low single-storey porch with a modern slated roof that projects to the right. Most of the moat openings have been blocked, except for a rear door with roughly splayed reveals and a timber lintel to the left of the porch, a small square fixed nine-pane window near the center, and a bipartite window at the left-hand bay on the first floor, which is an enlargement. There is also an original single-storey outbuilding attached to the southwest gable, featuring a single four-pane window on the front and a garage door on the rear elevation.
