Description

The Council Offices located at 7 and 9 Mount Pleasant Road in Rothesay, Bute, date from the mid-19th century. This asymmetrical, two-storey, four-bay building was converted for office use in the early 20th century. It features full-height advanced gabled bays on the outer right and the penultimate bay on the outer left, along with a projecting single-storey gabled entrance porch. The structure is constructed of cherry-cocked rubble sandstone with polished sandstone dressings. Notable architectural details include a raised base course, corniced eaves, and fleur-de-lys finials atop the gables. The building is also adorned with chamfered strip quoins, stugged yellow sandstone quoins, stugged long and short surrounds to architraved openings, and chamfered cills. There are later additions at the rear.

On the west (entrance) elevation, the gabled porch is offset to the left of center and features an architraved Tudor-arch centered in the apex, topped with a fleur-de-lys finial. The porch contains a two-leaf glazed timber door set at an angle. To the outer left, there are single windows on both floors, with a hoodmould at ground level. The advanced bay to the left of center also has single windows on both floors, with a hoodmould at the first floor, and a blank armorial panel centered in the apex. The recessed bay to the right of center has single windows on both floors, while the outer right bay features a three-light canted window at ground level and a hoodmoulded single window at the first floor, along with another blank armorial panel centered in the apex.

The windows throughout the building are timber sash and case, featuring 10, 12, 15, and 18 panes, with some lying-panes. The roof is covered with graded grey slate and has raised stone skews, although the replacement rainwater goods are missing. Coped ridge stacks are positioned to the left and right of center.

Inside, the building has been adapted for office use and includes some timber panelling.

The boundary wall along Mount Pleasant Road is made of random rubble and features round-arched coping. Rectangular-plan piers flank the pedestrian entrance, topped with pyramidal caps, and there is a replacement timber gate.
