Description

34 Castle Street in Rothesay, Bute, is a building from the mid to later 19th century that has been converted for both residential and office use. This classically detailed structure features two storeys, a basement, and an attic, with a four-bay block that has a pediment and a single gabled bay that advances to the outer right. The exterior is made of harl-pointed tooled rubble sandstone with polished sandstone margins and strip quoins. There is a polished band course at the principal floor, and the eaves are overhanging with timber brackets. The ground floor has corniced windows, while the first floor showcases pediment detailing, stone mullions on bipartite windows, and projecting cills.

On the north elevation, there are steps leading to the ground floor entrance located in the penultimate bay to the outer right. This entrance features stone treads, a decorative cast-iron balustrade, a tripartite fanlight, and a pedimented door-surround for the entrance office. Above, there is a single window aligned at the first floor and a three-light canted dormer above that. The building is regularly fenestrated on both floors in two bays to the left of the entrance, with a small pediment centered in the apex above. The outer left bay has single windows on both floors, and a three-light canted dormer that is offset to the right. The advanced bay to the outer right includes bipartite windows at both the ground and first floors, with a pediment at the first floor, and a single attic window centered in the apex.

The windows are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case, although the advanced bay to the outer right has replacement glazing. The dormers feature 2-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with graded grey slate and has raised skews, along with replacement rainwater goods. There is a coped rendered apex stack to the north and a single circular chimney can.

The interior was not seen in 1996. The boundary wall consists of a low coped rubble wall along Castle Street, with replacement cast-iron railings. Square-plan polished sandstone piers flank the entrance and have tiered pyramidal caps.
