Description

36 and 38 Castle Street in Rothesay, Bute, is a mid to later 19th-century tenement building that was refurbished in the late 20th century. It is a classically detailed, three-storey structure with a basement and features four bays, with an advanced bay on the outer left. The exterior is constructed of harl-pointed rubble sandstone, with raised, polished margins and tooled yellow rubble sandstone dressings. Notable elements include a polished band course at the principal floor, a raised lintel course beneath the corniced eaves, and tooled rubble quoins. The windows are architraved at the ground, first, and second floors, with cornicing at the first floor and corbelled cills at the ground.

The north elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a cast-iron balustraded stair leading to the ground floor entrance located in the penultimate bay to the outer left. This entrance features a plate-glass fanlight, a painted surround, and a corbelled cornice. The first and second floors have single windows aligned above the entrance. The building is regularly fenestrated at the ground, first, and second floors in the two bays to the right of the entrance, with a single basement window in the penultimate bay to the outer right and flanking single doors leading to entrance No 34 Castle Street in the bay to the outer right. The advanced bay to the outer left features tripartite windows at the ground, first, and second floors.

Most of the windows are predominantly replacement 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with some 6-pane sash and case tripartite glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a corniced wallhead and apex stacks, along with circular cans. The interior was not seen in 1996.
