Description

5 Bishop Terrace is a mid to later 19th century house located in Rothesay, Bute. This symmetrical, single-storey building features a basement and attic and is designed in a simple classical style, forming a near pair with the adjacent No 4. The exterior is constructed of coursed stugged sandstone with painted sandstone dressings. Notable architectural features include a raised band course at the principal floor, a lintel course beneath the corniced eaves, painted quoins, and painted long and short surrounds to the openings. The ground floor windows have stepped hoodmoulds and projecting cills.

The northwest entrance elevation showcases a double-forestair made of coursed sandstone, with decorative cast-iron uprights and a cast-iron handrail leading to an advanced gabled doorpiece at the center. The door is a recessed replacement with a plate-glass fanlight above, flanked by Doric pilasters, a plain frieze, a block pediment, and a raised keystone. There are single windows in the outer left and right bays at ground level, with three-light canted dormers above. The basement features small rectangular windows in the outer bays.

The building predominantly has replacement timber glazing, with uPVC glazing in the dormers. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, featuring raised stone skews and rendered apex stacks at the northeast and southwest, although the cans are missing.

The boundary wall consists of a coursed stugged sandstone wall with round-arched coping along Bishop Terrace. It is flanked by paired whitewashed panelled square-plan piers that mark the pedestrian and vehicular entrances, topped with pyramidal caps.
