Description

Roslin Castle is a late 15th-century castle with subsequent additions and alterations, situated around a courtyard. The listing covers only the east range of the castle, with the remaining elements designated as a scheduled monument.

The east range, constructed in 1597 and embellished in 1622, is a two-storey, irregular five-bay building with an additional single-storey bay at the southern end, representing the former hall. The range is characterised by moulded base and eaves courses, timber sash windows, and a crowstepped gable at the north end, covered by a graded grey slate roof. Ashlar chimneys are located at each end of the roof, with another set closer to the south end. A delicately carved panel, initialed "SWS" and dated 1622, sits above the principal doorway, accompanied by a carved niche. A small, carved window is positioned to the left of the doorway. A corbelled turnpike stairtower projects from the northern end, featuring carved leaded glass windows between floors and beneath the eaves. A large, architraved window is centrally located at ground-floor level, surmounted by an ornamental, triangular gabled window that breaks the eaves, with a heraldic device above. The east elevation is five bays wide and varies between four and five storeys, with a projecting tower on the outer left. The south elevation contains a crowstepped gable, a lower adjoining gable, a blocked roll-moulded doorway, two single windows at ground floor level, and another blocked opening above.

The interior includes a scale and platt stair connecting the lower three vaulted floors to the upper levels. The north room at courtyard level features timber panelling and a highly decorative coffered plaster ceiling dated 1623. There is another timber-panelled room above this. A fine moulded and carved fireplace is located on the west wall of the roofless former hall at the south end of the range.

Excluded from the listing is the scheduled monument SM1208, as per Section 1(4A) of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997.
