Description

Gospatric House is an earlier to mid-19th century house, substantially enlarged in 1870 by J Maitland Wardrop. The original house is a two-storey and attic, three-bay structure, with a parallel two-storey and attic range added to the north, extending west and incorporating a contemporary entrance porch in the re-entrant angle to the south. A single-storey and attic wing was also added to the east, culminating in a single-storey gable.

The original core of the house has rubble walls with polished ashlar dressings. The later additions are constructed with stugged, squared, and snecked sandstone walls, also with stugged and drooved dressings. Windows in all sections have projecting cills.

The west-facing elevation is asymmetrical. The west gable of the north range projects, containing a bipartite window at ground level, a single window above, and an architraved panel at the gablehead. The west gable of the original core is slightly recessed. The entrance porch, in the re-entrant angle, is a single-storey gable with a bipartite window on its south side, a pointed-arched door with an armorial panel and hoodmould above, and a narrow window to the outer left at first floor within the gable behind.

The south-facing elevation is symmetrical, with a blank section at ground level in the centre bay, and bipartite windows in the bays to the left and right. It has regular fenestration at the first floor.

The north-facing (garden) elevation is also asymmetrical. The main block on the right comprises two widely-spaced bays; a single window is at ground level in the left bay, and two windows flank the bay at first floor. To the right is a ball-finialed, two-storey, three-light canted window that breaks the eaves, with a small window centred in the gable above it. The wing extending to the left has a regularly fenestrated two-bay elevation with dormers with gabled stone dormerheads, breaking the eaves in each bay at the first floor.

The house has plate glass timber sash and case windows, a graded grey slate roof, and slate-hung gabled timber dormers with bipartite windows. The eaves overhang, displaying exposed rafter ends and timber barge boards. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present. Stugged sandstone stacks with deep corniced copes and circular cans are a feature, with three-flue gablehead stacks to the core and east gables of the addition, and a shouldered wallhead stack to the south side of the latter.

The property includes ashlar garden terrace walls with an urn, a rubble garden wall to the road with square, droved ashlar gatepiers.
