Description

This is an early 12th-century Romanesque church, located in Dalmeny, with later additions and alterations from the 17th century, and a tower designed by Alfred Greig in 1937. The church is laid out as a three-bay nave, a single-story chancel, a stilted apse to the east, and a Rosebery aisle projecting north, forming a T-plan. It is constructed from squared and droved sandstone ashlar with stugged and polished dressings.

The tower, which incorporates earlier fabric, is a three-stage square plan structure with an angle buttress. The base stage has blank walls, the second stage has round-arched windows, and the third stage features round arched arrowslits, with matching arrow slits in the angle buttress. The South elevation is slightly advanced between the centre and left bays and features a studded timber round-arched entrance, flanked by a double order of engaged Romanesque columns. The inner row of columns has carvings of zodiacal and bestiary figures, while the outer row has projecting grotesque heads and an Agnus Dei. A blind intersecting arcade with paired columns and scalloped capitals is also visible, along with carved corbels at the eaves. Round-arched windows with nook-shafts and carved voussoirs are positioned above the string course in each bay. The remains of a former addition are visible on the lower chancel to the right. The eastern apse is located to the outer right.

The North elevation has a round-arched doorway with chevrons, a supporting cornice, and a double order of engaged Romanesque columns with scalloped capitals, leading to a studded and panelled door. A 20th-century lean-to addition is situated on the left near the re-entrant angle. A round-arched doorway with a window above is near the re-entrant angle to the west, alongside a carved armorial panel displaying the Primrose arms, with a window above. The apse is located to the outer left.

The eastern elevation presents a lower, symmetrical, semicircular-ended apse with round-arched windows featuring engaged colonettes and carved voussoirs on the North, South, and East sides, and grotesque heads to the corbels.

Inside, the church features a rib-vaulted roof. Romanesque arches have scalloped and chevroned capitals, and corbels with human and grotesque heads. An acanthus pattern adorns the abaci. The apse is narrower than the chancel, which is narrower than the nave. Medieval graveslabs are set in the chancel and apse floor. Other features include a timber pulpit by H O Tarbolton from 1928, featuring evangelical beasts forming capitals, and a stone font by Ian G Lindsay from 1950. Three stained glass lights within the apse depict a Madonna and Child, St Margaret, and St Theresa, created by Lalia Dickson in 1942. A variety of other stained glass windows are also present. The roof is finished with graded grey slate, stone ridge, cast-iron rainwater goods, and skews with bracket skewputts.

The churchyard contains a variety of graves and monuments, including table-tops and gravestones, and is partly enclosed by a random rubble wall with semicircular coping.
