Description
The lodge at Larch Grove on Johnsburn Road in Balerno, Edinburgh, dates from the late 19th to early 20th century. It is a single-storey, three-bay building with a rectangular plan, featuring white-painted harl and red sandstone dressings, a base course, and undressed margins around the windows. The eaves are advanced with exposed rafters.
On the south elevation, there are three bays. The central feature is a timber gabled porch, with a tripartite window facing south and a half-glazed door on the right side. Flanking gabled windows break the eaves. The north elevation has a modern two-bay flat-roofed scullery addition on the outer left and a window on the outer right. Both the east and west elevations feature a gabled window that breaks the eaves at the center.
The windows are 12-pane sash and case types. The roof is covered with graded grey slate and has a piended shape, with terracotta ridge tiles, one curling, scrolled finial remaining, while the one to the right is missing. A broad, coped red sandstone ridge stack is present.
The gatepiers, railings, and boundary wall consist of stugged red sandstone piers with sunk-chamfer arrises, topped with an ashlar cornice and obelisk cap. Low, curving red sandstone plinth walls with decorative cast iron railings, some featuring Jacobean strapwork details, connect the main gates to the outer blocky piers. The outer piers are made of red sandstone with pyramidal caps. A tall rubble boundary wall with semicircular coping runs north along Bridge Road.
