Description
The Malleny Arms Hotel, located at 15 Main Street in Balerno, Edinburgh, is a public house built in the later 19th century. It is a two-storey building with a three-bay rectangular plan. The main front is constructed of honey-coloured sandstone ashlar, while the rear and sides feature stugged squared and snecked sandstone. The building has polished stone margins and dressings, a base course, a strong course, and raised quoins.
On the west elevation, there are three asymmetrical bays, with a decorative full-height canted bay on the outer left. The roof is piended and adorned with wrought-iron brattishing, and there is a dormer above. The central entrance features a consoled cornice and a two-leaf half-glazed panelled door, with a wrought-iron bracket supporting a sign that reads 'Malleny Arms.' Above the door is a window, and the outer right bay has a bipartite window at both the ground and first floors, with a stone mullion. There are two gabled timber dormers symmetrically placed, each topped with wrought-iron finials.
The south elevation includes a gable with a blocked door on the outer left and a window off-centre to the right on the first floor. There is a two-bay, flat-roofed block rendered in cement on the outer right. The north elevation features a gable with a basement door at the centre ground and a window to the outer left at the gablehead.
The building has plate glass sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with lead flashings, and dormers that are slate-roofed and slate-hung. The apex stacks are broad and coped with sandstone.
Inside, the bar has been modernised.
