Description

41 and 43 Bavelaw Road is an early 20th-century, two-storey building with a basement, designed in an asymmetrical L-plan style. It served as a lodge and offices for a former paper mill. The exterior features stugged, squared sandstone with stugged red sandstone margins and dressings, while the gables and rear elevations are made of brick. The building has chamfered reveals and quoins.

On the west elevation, there is a two-bay block facing the street, with a lower gabled bay on the outer left. The outer right has a bipartite window at ground level, with a corresponding bipartite, triangular, pedimented dormer above. The ground level on the outer left features a door with a two-pane letterbox fanlight and a small window above it. To the left, there is a rubble wall that screens a recessed brick bay, which has a forestair leading to the door, topped with a sandstone lintel.

The south elevation consists of three bays, with a gable on the outer left. It has an advanced shouldered flue with an apex stack, supported on a corbel at the center. There is a recessed blank plaque at the first floor to the left, with a window to the right and another window at ground level on the right. The outer right bay has broader windows, with a ground floor window and a pedimented dormerhead above.

The rear of the building features side elevations made of brick with a variety of openings. All windows are currently blocked. The roof is covered with grey slate and has lead flashings, raised ashlar skews, and corniced apex stacks. The skews and skewputts of the pedimented dormerheads are finished with ashlar coping.

The boundary wall is made of rubble with harl pointing and has a semicircular, stugged red sandstone coping.
