Description
The Balerno Bank Paper Mill Offices, located at 45 Bavelaw Road in Edinburgh, is an earlier 20th-century, two-storey office block designed in the Scots Baronial style. The building features a rambling plan and is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone, accented with polished red sandstone margins and dressings. The rear has banded brick above the basement, along with a base course, crowstepped gables, chamfered reveals, a string course, and quoins.
On the west (main) elevation, the building has a three-bay layout with the entrance bay positioned to the outer left. This entrance features a corniced and pilastered doorcase, with a panel in the cornice inscribed "J G & Co Ltd founded 1916." Above the entrance, the second floor is corbelled to support a circular turret topped with a conical roof. To the outer left, there is a coped, stepped wall of a single-storey block. A narrow bay is recessed at an angle to the left, connecting the street elevation with a former access elevation, which includes a pedimented dormer and a cartouche panel below displaying the J G & Co Ltd monogram. The two bays to the right of the entrance include a two-storey section over a raised basement. The penultimate bay features a bipartite window at ground level and a transomed and mullioned window on the second floor, topped with a dormerhead that has a segmental-headed pediment and a crescent finial. The crowstepped gable on the outer right is slightly advanced, featuring a ball finial, a tripartite basement window, a tripartite transomed and mullioned window at the principal floor, and a bipartite window at the gablehead.
The north elevation has four bays, with a two-bay gabled block at the center flanked by narrow outer bays. The arrangement of openings at the basement level is asymmetrical, while the first floor has four bipartite windows arranged near-symmetrically. The gable breaks the eaves at the center and includes two windows and an apex stack, with triangular-pedimented dormerheads on either side. There is also a single-storey, canted block with a blocking course at the outer right.
The south elevation features a sandstone gable with openings to the outer left extending from the basement to the second floor, and a window at ground level on the outer right. The rear elevation, made of brick and sandstone, has varying openings, suggesting it has been altered for some reason, with most windows now blocked. However, where windows remain, there are 6-pane over 2-pane sash and case windows, as well as plate glass sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has lead flashings, with ashlar coping to the skews and corniced and quoined apex and ridge stacks. Square rainwater heads complete the exterior.
The interior was not seen in 1993.
