Description
Dean Park House is an earlier 19th century, two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan house located at 2 Mansfield Road, Balerno, Edinburgh. The building is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone, featuring ashlar dressings and margins, a base course, a string course, and raised quoins.
The northeast (main) elevation showcases three symmetrical bays, with single-storey blocks on the outer left and right. The central bay is slightly advanced and includes a blocking course, a pilastered and corniced doorcase with paterae above the pilasters, and a deep-set nine-panelled door topped with a three-pane fanlight. Windows are symmetrically arranged in the flanking bays. The single-storey block to the right has a coped wall with a blind window that conceals lean-to stores at the rear, while the block to the left features French doors.
On the southwest (rear) elevation, there are three bays with a half-piend-roofed block at the outer right corner. A single-storey, piend-roofed scullery block is advanced at the centre, which has two small windows on the north elevation, a narrow door on the left return, and a barred window on the right return. Above this, there is a round-headed stair window with leaded glass. French doors are located at the ground outer left. The half-piend-roofed block at the right corner abuts the garden wall and includes a window and a lean-to door.
The southeast elevation features a single-storey lean-to block at ground level, showing evidence of alterations and rebuilding in the wall surface. There is a small window at the centre, which was formerly a larger opening, and the roof skirts around the first-floor window at the centre. Two gabled dormers are symmetrically placed.
The northwest elevation has a window at both the ground and first floor, which is off-centre to the left. There are two piend-roofed dormers symmetrically arranged, and a lean-to storage block at the left corner with a boarded door.
The house includes 12-pane sash and case windows, as well as a 4-pane sash and case window at the rear ground right. The roofing consists of grey slate with piend and platform sections, lead flashings, corniced sandstone ridge stacks, and octagonal cans.
The interior was not seen in 1993. The property is also accompanied by gatepiers and a boundary wall made of coursed rubble with slab coping, featuring square corniced piers topped with ball finials.
