Description

Gardens House, located at Arniston House, dates from around 1764 and is a two-storey, three-bay traditional house with a rectangular plan. The exterior is constructed of tooled rubble with broached dressings, featuring long and short quoins and splayed reveals on the first floor of the south elevation.

The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, is nearly symmetrical. It has a chamfered doorway at the center of the ground floor, leading to a timber door topped with a five-pane fanlight. Flanking the doorway are 19th-century bipartite windows. The first floor has regular fenestration. To the right, there is a single-storey, droved, coursed sandstone screen wall with a central chamfered doorway and a boarded timber door, showcasing polished strip quoins and flat coping that sweeps down to a right angle. Additionally, there is a mono pitch garage with two leaf boarded timber doors on the outer right.

The east elevation is symmetrical and consists of a single bay. It features a large, blind pointed arched opening at the center of the first floor, complete with raised margins and impost detail, and rendered brick infill with skew blocks.

The north elevation is asymmetrical and has three bays. It includes a small single-pane window at the center of the ground floor, a window in the left flanking bay, and a stair window positioned between the ground and first floors. The left and right bays of the first floor have regular fenestration. There is a single-storey, late 19th-century extension that advances to the outer left and has a corrugated iron roof. The north and east elevations are obscured by potting sheds from the walled garden. A glazed boarded timber door is located to the left of the right return, flanked by a window.

The west elevation is also asymmetrical, featuring an off-center window to the left of the ground floor and a small single-pane window set in the center of the gable head.

The house predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with a lead ridge, and ashlar skews. The gable head stacks are harled and coped, equipped with circular cans, and there are cast iron rainwater goods.

The gatepiers are square in plan, made of droved, coursed sandstone with coped tops and tall pyramidal caps, featuring an iron-framed arch to the southeast of the house.

The interior was not seen in 1998.
