Description
Dated 1784, this is a circular, carved stone Neoclassical ornamental pillar situated on a square pedestal. The base is stepped, inscribed with the date "1784". The circular shaft features fluting with a central square dividing band course. Carved oval medallions are positioned above and below the shaft, which is surmounted by a marble urn. The urn is adorned with carved heads to the left and right of its base, a carved frieze, and a spherical finial. This unusual garden ornament predates Thomas White’s improvement plan for the grounds, dated 1791, and the subsequent informalising of the estate between 1787 and 1819. Its axial position relative to the house indicates it was originally intended to complement the earlier formal garden layout.
