Description

Elderscroft is a late 19th century, two-storey, three-bay house located on Springhill Road in Peebles. The building is set on ground that rises sharply to the rear and features a mix of rubble and cream sandstone ashlar dressings, with the ground floor painted and the sides and rear harled. It has quoin strips and chamfered arrises.

The northeast elevation, which serves as the entrance, showcases a pedimented tripartite doorpiece at the center, featuring a panelled door with a two-pane fanlight above. There is a window above that breaks the eaves, topped with a cill and a pedimented dormerhead. Flanking this entrance are full-height canted bays, with the left bay having a piended roof and a wrought-iron finial, while the right bay features a shaped parapet against a raised wallhead, also with a piended roof and a similar finial.

On the southeast elevation, there is a broad advanced bay to the right with windows shifted to the left, along with an apex stack. The center has a further gabled bay, and there is a set-back bay to the left.

The southwest elevation includes a gabled bay to the left with windows at the center, and a later door at the first floor to the right, which leads to an upper flat. There is a set-back bay to the right, with a window at the first floor breaking the eaves and topped with a gabled dormerhead, as well as a window in the re-entrant angle to the left.

The northwest elevation features a broad gabled bay to the left, with a corbelled timber canted window to the right at the first floor. There are two bays to the right, with windows at the first floor breaking the eaves and topped with gabled dormerheads.

The house has timber sash and case windows, with multi-pane designs on the upper sashes, although many have been replaced with modern versions. The roof is covered with grey slates and features ashlar coped skews, corbel skewputts, and ashlar dressed coped stacks with octagonal cans.

The property is also accompanied by boundary walls made of rubble with saddleback ashlar coping, and boulder coping on the sides. Square ashlar gatepiers topped with pyramidal caps support cast-iron gates and railings.
