Description

Whiteknowe is a late 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay house situated with its back to Innerleithen Road in Peebles. The building is constructed of whinstone rubble, featuring a cream sandstone front and dressings.

The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a central doorpiece adorned with a strapwork pediment, finials, and a rosette, along with a sunburst fanlight above. There is a gable-headed window on the first floor with concave sides, a small pediment, and a finial at the apex, flanked by full-height canted windows. The right window has a tall piended roof topped with a wrought-iron weathervane finial, while the left window features a crenellated parapet.

On the east elevation, there is a broad gable bay to the left that includes a corbelled bipartite window on the first floor, and a lower bay to the right. The north elevation has an M-gabled design with a Venetian window at the centre of the first floor. There is a projecting lower range with a pair of piended roofs and irregular fenestration. The west elevation features a broad gable to the right with large windows shifted to the left, and a lower bay to the left.

The house has timber sash and case windows, which include both 4-pane and plate glass. The roof is covered with grey slates, and it features ashlar-coped skews and pedestal skewputts on the south side. The coped ashlar apex stacks have octagonal cans.

The interior was not seen during the 1994 inspection. Surrounding the property are rubble boundary walls topped with boulder coping, square ashlar gatepiers with plain cornices and C-scrolled crests, and wrought-iron gates.
