Description

Ravensmeade is a large, symmetrical double villa built in 1898 by J Hall of Galashiels. It features two storeys and three bays, constructed from whinstone with cream sandstone ashlar dressings. The building has a base course and deep concave ashlar eaves, along with half-timbered gableheads.

The front elevation has a broad central bay with a three-bay arcaded timber porch supported by turned and blocked columns, topped with a modillioned cornice and a tiled piended roof. There are a pair of two-leaf panelled doors with leaded rectangular fanlights in the outer bays, and a pair of narrow windows in the centre. On the first floor, there are bipartite windows with a moulded cill situated between the porch roof and the cornice, along with a small gablehead above. The flanking bays feature two-storey piend-roofed canted windows that break through the eaves.

The east and west elevations each have windows on both floors at the centre, with a wallhead stack and a small gablehead above. There is a lower single-storey and attic projecting service range set back to the north, which includes a back door.

The north elevation shows each house with two bays displaced to the right, featuring windows on both floors. At the centre, there is a projecting service range with a piended gable and windows on both floors.

The villa has timber sash and case plate glass windows, with multi-pane sashes on the first floor beneath the gables. The roof is covered with grey slates, complemented by terracotta ridge tiles and finials, and moulded cast-iron eaves gutters.

The boundary walls are made of rubble with saddleback ashlar coping at the front, and there are brick dividing walls with pipe coping.
