Description
Glentrees is a large, two-storey, three-bay Neo-Georgian villa designed by James Miller in 1904. The building is constructed from squared snecked and stugged cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, featuring raised margins and a block modillioned timber cornice.
The front elevation includes a central timber doorpiece with a modillioned open pediment supported by scrolled acanthus leaf consoles and Tuscan Doric pilasters. The deep-set panelled door has panelled jambs and a semi-circular sunburst fanlight above, with a window located on the first floor. To the right, there is a full-height canted window, while the left bay features a canted window at ground level with a cornice, blocking course, and cast-iron railings, along with a pair of windows on the first floor.
The west elevation showcases the principal block with a large tripartite stair window at the centre and a smaller window below, both featuring ashlar mullions and a transom. The right side is blank with a wallhead stack, while the left side has bipartite windows on both floors. A lower two-bay service range is attached to the north, with a door on the right and a later single-storey range beyond.
On the east elevation, the principal block has windows on both floors positioned towards the outer left and right sides, with a window in the centre on the first floor and a wallhead stack. A lower three-bay service range is set back to the right, featuring a door, a window, and a tripartite window at ground level, along with a slate-hung attic lobby that includes a fire escape. There is also a two-bay single-storey range to the north.
The north (rear) elevation is made of whinstone with cream sandstone margins. It has windows at the centre on both floors, with the first-floor window converted for fire escape access, and bipartite windows on both floors to the left. There are projecting service ranges to the right.
The villa features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a slightly swept piend and platform roof covered in grey slates, corniced ashlar stacks, and cast-iron guttering that completes the cornice, along with corresponding downpipes.
The boundary walls consist of a coped rubble wall at the front and brick dividing walls with clay pipe coping.
