Description

Barima is a late 19th century, two-storey, three-bay villa located on Springhill Road in Peebles. The building is constructed from whinstone rubble, featuring a cream sandstone front elevation and decorative dressings. It has a regular arrangement of windows, with chamfered arrises, and the first-floor windows extend beyond the eaves, topped with gabled dormerheads.

The front elevation (southwest) showcases a central roll-moulded doorcase that has a consoled cornice and block pediment, leading to a panelled door with a plate glass fanlight. To the right, there is a projecting bipartite window with a crenellated parapet. On the left, a projecting gabled window bay features a canted ground floor with a bipartite window at the front, gradually corbelling to a square shape on the first floor, and is topped with a finial. Adjacent to this is a blank, set-back single-storey service wing.

The northwest elevation includes a projecting single-storey service wing at ground level with a gable at the centre. The main block has a gabled roof with a window to the left on the first floor and an apex stack.

The northeast elevation, facing the park, has a stair window at the centre and a full-height canted window to the left, also with a crenellated parapet. The southeast elevation is gabled and features a triangular-headed window to the left on the first floor.

The villa is fitted with timber sash and case plate glass windows, with single windows having four panes. The roof is covered with grey slates and terracotta ridge tiles, and features ashlar coped skews, corbel and gablet skewputts, and coped ashlar stacks with octagonal cans. The cast-iron downpipes are square in section and include decorative fixtures and hoppers.

The boundary walls consist of a low rubble wall with saddleback ashlar coping along the road, which adjoins the park gates. There is also a taller wall with boulder coping that borders the park. The interior was not seen in 1994.
