Description

Springbank Lodge is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey house with later additions, located on Polton Road in Lasswade. The building features a near symmetrical, five-bay design with an advanced crowstepped gabled bay at the center. The principal elevation is constructed from stugged, snecked grey sandstone, while the rear is made of coursed sandstone rubble. The openings have droved long and short surrounds, raised cills, and there is a blank square panel with a rose finial at the gablehead. Quoins are present at the angles.

On the northwest (principal) elevation, the advanced central bay has a timber, three-light canted window at the ground floor and a tripartite window above it on the first floor. There is a single window at each floor in the bays to the left. A flat-roofed porch is located in the bay to the right of center, featuring a raised, droved architraved doorway with a timber panelled door and a rectangular fanlight. A small window is positioned to the right return, with a single window above on the first floor. The outer right bay also has a single window at each floor. To the extreme right, there is a single-storey crowstepped screen wall with a lean-to wing behind it, which includes French windows and a narrow, three-light fanlight above.

The southeast (rear) elevation consists of three bays with a crowstepped gable at the center and a lean-to wing to the southwest. There is a single window at each floor in the central bay, with additional windows at the first floor in the bays to the right and left, and a small window at the first floor to the outer left.

The building showcases a variety of glazing patterns, including four- and twelve-pane timber sash and case windows, a lying-pane canted window, and a lying-pane window at the ground in the center bay at the rear. The roof is piended and covered with purple slate, with slate also used for the wing. Ashlar coped stacks are present at the southwest wallhead and the ridge, along with ashlar skew to the wing and ashlar cope to the porch. The property features cast-iron rainwater goods.

The gateway and boundary walls consist of an ashlar corniced gateway topped with a ridged blocking course, an ashlar architrave with a boarded door, and stugged sandstone walls capped with a ridged ashlar cope.
