Description
Strathmore, 7 Broomieknowe, Lasswade
A mid-19th-century house with later additions and alterations, built of stugged ashlar sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. The main block is 2 storeys and 3 bays, with a lower recessed 3-bay wing to the right, a single-storey added porch to the outer right, and a 4-stage Italianate tower with a stable block to the rear. The design incorporates a base course, a band course between ground and first-floor levels, and a parapet with long and short quoins. Windows feature cornices with advanced 3-light canted and 3-light straight bays flanking the door. The timber fourth stage of the tower contrasts with the stone below, which carries a cill course to the third stage.
The principal elevation (south-east) comprises the main block with the wing to the right. A slightly advanced doorpiece with a painted dentilled cornice and architraved doorway (fitted with a timber panelled door) is flanked to the left by a full-height 3-light canted window in a bay. To the right stands an advanced 2-storey 3-light window in a bay. Above the door is a single window at first-floor level. The wing to the right has single windows at ground level and segmental-arched windows at first-floor level. A set-back architraved doorway to the porch (with a timber panelled door and letterbox fanlight above) sits at the outer right.
The rear elevation (north-west) is 2 storeys and 4 bays, with a 3-storey tower at the outer left. The 3-stage tower features a single window at the first stage, paired round-arched windows at the third stage (repeated on the south-west elevation), and six round-arched windows grouped 2-2-2 across all elevations at the fourth stage. The tower carries bracketed eaves, a slate pyramidal roof with a weather vane, and a coped ashlar stack to the right. The main block has a single attenuated window at ground level in a central bay with a window above at first-floor level. Another single window at ground level appears in a bay to the inner left, with a corresponding first-floor window in the bay to the outer left. A 2-storey 3-light canted bay projects at the outer right, with segmental-arched windows at first-floor level.
The stable block elevation (north-east) is a single storey with a loft, extending 7 bays, incorporating a 2-bay porch to the outer left and a wing to the outer right. A wide segmental-arched window marks the central bay, repeated in the bay to the right where a single dormer window appears in the loft. Single windows occupy three further bays to the left of centre and a penultimate bay to the right. Boarded doors with rectangular fanlights are positioned in the bay to the outer right and in the bay to the right of the porch, with single windows flanking these openings. The left return of the wing carries a single window and a boarded door.
The south-west elevation shows a 2-storey, 2-bay house front with a single window at ground level in the centre bay, a first-floor window above, and a coped ashlar stack. A single window appears at ground level in the bay to the right. The rear of the stable block on this elevation is an irregular single storey of 5 bays. An advanced full-height shouldered chimney breast with twin ashlar coped stacks occupies the central bay, backed by a louvered square-plan vent to the roof and a bipartite window in the left return. A segmental arch with modern glazing sits set back at the outer left. A later 3-bay section, recessed to the right, contains modern glazed double doors flanked by single windows.
The roofing is piended slate throughout, and the windows comprise timber sash-and-case frames, some fitted with modern glazing. Cast-iron rainwater goods are in place.
A later 3-bay garage outbuilding, built of stugged ashlar sandstone with polished ashlar dressings and a piended slate roof, has modern doors.
The boundary comprises stugged ashlar sandstone walls with rounded ashlar coping, set with square-plan chamfered gatepiers topped by pyramidal copes and fitted with wrought-iron gates.
