Description
Strathesk Manse is an earlier 19th-century house with later additions, located at 45 Polton Road in Lasswade. This two-storey, three-bay building features a symmetrical plain classical design and includes a single-storey L-plan wing at the northeast angle. The exterior is constructed of stugged ashlar sandstone, complemented by polished and droved ashlar dressings. Notable architectural details include a base course, a band course between the ground and first floor, an eaves course, channelled quoins at the corners, quoin strips at the centre bay, and raised margins around the windows.
On the northwest (principal) elevation, there is an advanced full-height central bay with a prominent corniced doorpiece supported by Doric columns. The entrance features a deep-set timber panelled door topped with a two-pane fanlight, with a window located above it on the first floor. Each of the flanking bays has a single window on both floors. To the outer left, there is an ashlar coped screen wall that is recessed and contains a single window.
The southeast (rear) elevation is irregular and consists of three bays. It features a later brick lean-to porch at ground level in the central bay, with a stair window above. The ground and first floor windows in the right bay are not aligned, while the left bay has two irregularly placed ground floor windows and a window above on the first floor. The single-storey wing on the outer right has two boarded doors with letterbox fanlights above in the central bay, a window in the right bay, and a boarded door with a flanking window in the left return.
The northeast (side) elevation has a blank wall with a gablehead stack above the single-storey, five-bay wing, which is arranged in groups of two, two, and one. This elevation includes a pair of boarded doors to the right, a single window to the outer right, and a pair of windows to the left, with a wallhead stack on the outer left.
The principal and rear elevations feature 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while other elevations display a variety of glazing patterns. The roof is covered with grey slate and includes skylights on the southeast side, as well as ashlar coped gablehead stacks on the northeast and southwest sides, ashlar coped skews, and cast-iron rainwater goods. There is also a detached modern garage with a harled exterior and a corrugated pitched roof located to the northwest.
The interior was not seen in 1996. The property is complemented by sandstone rubble gatepiers topped with rounded ashlar copes and square-plan gatepiers with squared ashlar copes.
