Description

Hay Cottage, located at 34 Broomieknowe in Bonnyrigg, is an earlier 19th-century single-storey house with a symmetrical, three-bay rectangular plan. It features a rear addition and an outbuilding to the west. The exterior is constructed from stugged ashlar sandstone, with raised painted ashlar margins around the openings, quoins at the corners, and contrasting long and short surrounds. There is a base course and an eaves course.

On the north (principal) elevation, there is an architraved doorpiece with a timber panelled door and a three-light fanlight above, flanked by a window in each bay. The east and west side elevations are blank and harled. The south (rear) elevation has not been fully seen since 1996.

The house has 12-pane timber sash and case windows and a grey slate roof, with slate on the addition. The gable ends are finished with ashlar skews and there are ashlar coped gablehead stacks on the east and west sides, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

The outbuilding is square in plan, made of sandstone rubble with a flat roof. The boundary walls are constructed from sandstone rubble topped with a curved ashlar cope and feature a wrought-iron gate, although the railings are no longer in place.
