Description
Lasswade Parish Church is a hall church dating from 1830, with additions made in 1894 by architects Hardy and Wight. It is situated on ground that rises to the southwest. The church is rectangular in plan, with a lower, two-story wing attached to the southeast angle. The principal and north-west elevations are constructed from stugged ashlar sandstone; the rear and southeast elevations are of coursed sandstone rubble. A base course runs along the principal elevation, continuing as a band course on the north-west elevation. A cill course with a datestone is in the centre, along with eaves and raised window cills. Quoins define the corners, and a dressed stone belfry topped with a weather vane is present.
The northeast (principal) elevation features a slightly advanced, pedimented central bay, which is flanked by two further bays. A square-plan porch with a cornice and blocking course is set into the ground floor of the central bay, with a window above, and a timber-panelled door on each return. The southwest (rear) elevation has two bays, with a lower wing clasping the angle to the right. There are tall windows in each bay, alongside a full-height rendered stack on the outer right. A ground floor window is present in the wing, with a stack above it. The northwest (road) elevation is two stories high and features two bays with windows on each floor. The southeast elevation has two stories, two bays. A single-story wing clasps the angle to the outer left, with a boarded door, window, and a further window at first floor level on the return.
The interior features a timber-panelled entrance porch with a part-glazed internal door and fanlight. An entrance hall with stone stairs at either end provides access to the gallery above. A curved gallery runs around three sides of the hall church, supported by iron shafts that denote aisles. Clapboarding runs to dado rail height. The pulpit is centrally located on the southwest wall, with steps on either side. Two round-arched stained glass windows by Ballantine and Gardiner flank the pulpit. Organ pipes are located to the left of the gallery, with a portable font and timber slatted pews also present.
The church also features round-arched, bipartite stained glass windows with circular central panes on the principal and rear elevations, and segmental-arched windows on the side elevations. Twelve-pane timber sash and case windows are found in the wing. The roof is piended and covered in grey slate, with a flat roof on the porch. A full-height ashlar coped, rendered brick stack rises from the southwest, as does an ashlar coped brick wallhead stack to the southwest of the wing. Cast-iron rainwater goods are in place. The boundary walls, gates, and railings are constructed of stugged and snecked ashlar sandstone with a rounded cope, and feature wrought iron with an arched gateway.
