Description

Bridgend House is an early 19th-century toll house that has undergone later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey building with a basement, featuring a canted symmetrical three-bay square plan. To the west, there is a single-storey garage that is rendered and harled. The ground floor is constructed of stugged ashlar sandstone, while the first floor is made of droved ashlar sandstone. The principal elevation has droved long and short surrounds to its openings, raised margins to the rear openings, a base course, a band course between the ground and first floor, an eaves course, and raised cills for the first-floor windows.

On the east (principal) elevation, the central bay is advanced and features a pilastered and corniced doorpiece, which now has a modern casement window instead of a door, with a window above it on the first floor. To the right, there is a modern glass block basement window, and the ground floor has replacement windows flanking the central bay, with single windows above on the first floor.

The north (entrance) elevation has three bays and includes a modern part-glazed entrance porch to the left of the centre, with a stair window directly above. There is a modern window at ground level in the left bay and a blinded window on the first floor above. To the right, there is a modern glass-block basement window, with single windows at both ground and first floors above.

The south (rear) elevation is irregular with three bays and features a square-plan porch at the centre, which has a partly glazed boarded door and another door to the right return. There is a window above the porch to the right of centre, a modern window in the left bay of the basement, and irregularly placed windows at each floor above. A window is located at the first floor in the outer right bay.

The first-floor windows on the principal elevation are two-pane timber sash and case, while there are various glazing patterns elsewhere. The roof is covered with piended grey slate, the garage has a monopitch roof, and the rear porch has a flat roof. There is a replaced ashlar, coped gablehead stack to the west, a harled and ashlar coped wallhead stack to the north, and a wallhead angled die to the outer right on the south. The building also features cast-iron rainwater goods.
