Description
This is a 1789 manse, with later alterations and additions. It is a two-story, three-bay symmetrical main block, with two-story, single-bay additions set back, clasping the rear angles. A single-story lean-to addition extends from the rear elevation, and a rear entrance porch is located in the north re-entrant angle. A single-story with loft, four-bay stable block is situated to the south.
The manse is constructed of squared and coursed cream sandstone rubble, with grey, droved sandstone dressings. Features include a base course, raised cills to windows, an eaves course, and quoins.
The southeast (entrance) elevation is five bays, grouped 1-3-1. The central bay features an architraved doorpiece with consoles and a cornice, above which is a window. There is a window at the first floor above this doorpiece, and a window at each floor in the bays to the right and left. Further windows at ground and first floor break the eaves in the outer right and left bays.
The northwest (rear) elevation has a five-bay central range (with intermediate windows blocked), a ground-level lean-to, and two-story wings projecting to the left and right. A lean-to and a later glazed porch adjoin the wing to the left.
The northeast (side) elevation is four bays, grouped 2-2, with an advanced wing offset to the right. A first-floor window is centrally positioned, above which is a multi-flue gablehead stack. A ground-floor window is located in the bay to the left, and several windows are found at ground level in the wing to the right of the center, with a central shouldered wallhead stack above.
The southwest (side) elevation is irregular, with three bays grouped 1-2, and an advanced single-bay wing offset to the left. A first-floor window is centrally located, with two small attic windows evenly disposed above the gable. A multi-flue gablehead stack is positioned above. A ground floor window is in the bay to the left, and a first-floor window is positioned above it. Windows are found at each floor of the wing to the left, with a central wallhead stack above.
Four-pane timber sash and case windows are used throughout, with twelve-pane windows in the lean-to at the rear. The rear entrance porch has modern plate glass windows, and a modern picture window is in the kitchen at the rear. The roof is covered in grey slate, with grey slate, piended roofs on the flanking additions, slate on the lean-tos and porch, ashlar coped stacks and skews, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
The stable block is a single-story with loft, gable-ended, four-bay range to the rear of the house, facing southeast. It has a replaced window to the left of centre, above which is a piend-roofed hayloft entrance. There is a square-arched cart entrance to the left, a boarded door with a fanlight to the outer left and outer right, a window to the right extremity of the rear, and a boarded door to the left extremity. A window is present in the southwest gabled end, above which is an ashlar coped and shouldered gablehead stack. The stable block also features ashlar coped skews and decorative gabletted skewputts.
