Description

The gate-lodge at Nazareth House in Hillhead, Lasswade, dates from the mid-19th century and has undergone later alterations and additions. This single-storey, baronial lodge is designed in a Latin cross-plan with gabled roofs, reflecting the style of architect William Burn. The building is constructed of stugged cream sandstone, featuring polished and droved ashlar dressings, with harling applied to the rear.

On the south elevation, the lodge has a two-bay layout, with an advanced gabled bay to the left of center and a long side of the cross to the right. There is a modern entrance porch at the re-entrant angle. The advanced gabled bay includes a three-light, canted bay window and a blank shield panel above, topped with a thistle finial. To the right of center, there is a bipartite window in the long bay.

The west elevation also has two bays, with an advanced gabled bay to the right, which was originally at the center. This bay features a bipartite window and a blind slit above in the gablehead, along with a trefoil finial at the apex. To the left of center, there is another bipartite window set back in an additional bay.

The east elevation consists of two bays, with a window in the gabled bay on the left and a Medieval-style slit above it. To the right, there is a window in the flat-roofed addition.

The north elevation features an advanced two-bay flat-roofed addition, with a bipartite window in each bay. There is also a lean-to timber porch with a part-glazed door on the outer left.

The lodge has 2-pane timber sash and case windows, with modern replacement windows in the addition. The roof is covered with grey slate, while the addition has a flat roof and the canted bay has an ashlar slab roof. The building features stepped ashlar skews with block skewputts and an ashlar cope on the addition. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present, although the guttering has been replaced with plastic.

The gatepiers and quadrant walls consist of circular-plan gatepiers leading to the main house, which have a flat cope and hemi-spherical cap. A smaller version of these gatepiers is located to the west of the lodge, with replacement wrought-iron gates. The walls are made of squared sandstone rubble with a shaped rubble cope.
