Description
Viewpark is an earlier 19th-century house with later alterations and additions, located at 7 Hillhead, Bonnyrigg and Lasswade. It is a 2-storey, 3-bay symmetrical house initially, but with an L-plan footprint extended by additions to the sides and rear. The house is constructed of droved grey sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. Details include a base course, cill course to the 1st-floor windows, an eaves course, cornice, and a blocking course. Openings have droved long and short surrounds, raised cills, and half-height strip quoins.
The south-west elevation, the principal facade, features a pilastered and corniced doorpiece in the central bay at ground level. This contains replacement, part-glazed, 2-leaf doors with a rectangular 4-pane fanlight. A replacement small-pane vestibule door is positioned behind the main doors. A window is located at 1st floor above the doorpiece, and windows are present in each floor of the flanking bays.
The south-east elevation is a 6-bay long arm of the L-plan, grouped 2-4, with various single-storey conservatory additions at ground level. A slightly advanced, 2-bay block is situated to the outer left, featuring a piended, square-plan conservatory between the bays at ground level, with a window in each bay above, and a wallhead stack set between them. To the right is a 4-bay block, with a window at each floor in the bay to the left. A lean-to conservatory projects from the ground level, incorporating a 2-bay piended sun-room spanning the centre and outer-right bays, also featuring a window in each bay at 1st floor.
The north-west elevation presents an irregular 5-bay internal angle of the L-plan. A single bay block is present with a bipartite window at ground level to the right. A canted, single-storey block clasps the angle of the main block, with irregular fenestration. A set-back, rectangular-plan block is set back at the internal angle of L. A segmental arch and rectangular opening provide access with boarded doors; windows are present in each bay at 1st floor.
The windows are predominantly 12-pane, 8-pane, and 4-pane timber sash and case windows, with a modern conservatory window. The grey slate piended roof incorporates slate to the additions; multi-flue, ashlar coped stacks are located to the south-east and north-west, and cast-iron rainwater goods are present.
The interior of the house was not inspected in 1997.
The property is further characterised by replacement, square-plan grey sandstone ashlar gatepiers with vertical blank panels and shallow pyramidal caps, replacement wrought-iron gates, and coped grey ashlar quadrant walls leading to further square-plan sandstone ashlar piers with cornice and shallow pyramidal caps. A brick lined rubble walled garden with rubble lean-to potting sheds with grey slate roofs is also present to the west.
