Description

Eskhill is a house dating to circa 1800, with later alterations and additions. It is built on a terrace where the ground falls steeply to the southeast. The main part of the house is a two-storey, three-bay building of a plain classical design, with full-height, narrow bow windows in the outer bays. Flanking this central block are single-storey, square-plan additions, including a lean-to conservatory on the southwest side and further lean-to additions to the rear.

The front (southeast) elevation is of stugged cream ashlar sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. The rear and additions are of squared sandstone rubble. The front elevation features a base course and an eaves course with an ashlar cope, along with long and short quoins. A square-plan sandstone garage with a grey slate piended roof stands to the northwest.

The southeast (entrance) elevation is three bays wide, with the flanking bays set back. A corniced and pilastered doorpiece is centrally located at ground level, containing a deep-set, two-leaf timber panelled door topped by a semi-circular fanlight; a window is positioned above the door at the first floor. Full-height, three-light, semi-circular bow windows are located in each of the flanking bays. A window is present within the screen wall of the outer right bay, and two oculi (small, circular windows) are set high above it. A lean-to conservatory projects from the screen wall in the outer left bay, also with two oculi above.

The northwest (rear) elevation incorporates the original three-bay block with projecting additions to the outer left and right. A full-height addition is situated between the centre and left bay, and a single-storey, lean-to addition extends from the centre bay to the outer right of the right-hand block. A small-pane glazed door is centrally located at ground level, flanked by a window; a first-floor window sits above it. There is a first-floor window to the right of the centre, and a ground-floor window to the outer right. A part-glazed door with a window above is on the left return of the full-height addition. A ground-floor window is present in the bay to the left, with a first-floor window above. An oculus flanked by two small windows is set high in the additional block to the outer left, alongside a non-aligned ground-floor window to the left.

The windows are timber sash and case with 12 panes. The bow windows retain timber mullions, which may be replacements. The roof is grey slate, piended, with flat roofs to the flanking additions, and slate to the lean-to additions. Ashlar coped wallhead stacks are present to the southwest and northeast. Ashlar copes also define the screen walls, and cast-iron rainwater goods with uPVC gutters serve the conservatory.

Square-plan ashlar sandstone gatepiers with an ashlar cope and square cap mark the entrance. A squared rubble terrace wall to the southeast separates the lower garden. A round-arched, barrel-vaulted grotto is recessed into the northwest side. Squared sandstone rubble walls are topped with a curved ashlar cope.
