Description

This railway tunnel dates to 1872 and formed part of the Edinburgh and Penicuik Railway, which operated until 1967 and is now incorporated into a cyclepath and walkway. The tunnel features horseshoe-shaped arches constructed with brick voussoirs. The entrances are built of rock-faced rubble; the western entrance exhibits a brick repair on the right-hand side, with wing walls largely concealed. The eastern entrance has a short wing wall to the left and a projecting wing wall to the right, topped by low stone parapets.
