Description
The Memorial Lodges at Glencorse Barracks in Penicuik were designed by John A. McWilliam in 1927. This pair of single-storey pavilion lodges, also referred to as sentry boxes, flank the pedestrian and vehicular gates, along with quadrant walls and gatepiers, creating the main entrance to Glencorse Barracks on the A701.
Constructed from rake-jointed sandstone, the lodges feature roll-moulded arrises and eaves cornices. Each lodge has a square plan and is topped with gentle ogee stone slate roofs.
The northeast lodge serves as a sentry box, showcasing tall round-arched openings facing the drive and barracks, along with a small window on the outer side. On the roadside, there is a Royal/Regimental panel with a moulded surround and ogee-head, intricately carved with 'GvR' set within a thistle wreath, topped with a crown and a medal below.
