Description

The building is a chapel located in the northeast block of the terrace at Glencorse Barracks, Penicuik, dating from around 1810. It is part of a raised terrace that was originally closed by a pair of two-storey blocks with piend roofs and a central archway, though the upper stage of the southwest block has been demolished. The structure features large, stugged, coursed sandstone masonry, with timber sides and rear on the northeast block above ground.

The terrace runs southwest to northeast, with embanked ground behind at the center. It includes a raised panel with a castellated gateway, a segmental arch, an impost course, and a crenellated parapet.

The northeast (chapel) block is two-storey and five-bay. The southeast elevation has two-leaf doors to stores on the ground to the left, a window and two further doors at the center, and a V-canted projection on the outer right that bears a door and window. Each bay of the upper storey has a window. The northwest elevation features clapboarded chapel extended to the north by a single bay with a bipartite window, and regular fenestration in the remaining bays, except for the bay to the left of center which has a lean-to porch and a door on the return.

The windows are timber, 12-pane sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate.

The interior was not seen in 2000.

The southwest block is single-storey, with the upper storey levelled as a platform on upper ground. The southeast elevation mirrors the chapel block with a V-cant to the outer left, a pair of two-leaf doors at the center, and a door to the outer right. There is a grille to the window of the V-cant, and the roof above is also covered with grey slates.
