Description

Nos. 1 and 2 Englefield Lodges, along with the gateway, gates, and flanking walls, were built in 1862 by Richard Armstrong in a Jacobean style. The lodges are constructed from snecked rock-faced Pennant sandstone with Bath stone ashlar dressings and feature a tiled roof. They have a cruciform plan with four gable ends and are two storeys tall, each with a plinth, string course, and parapeted gable ends topped with finials. The lodges have two stacks with octagonal shafts. Each lodge has a three-light stepped casement window on the first floor with a hoodmould, and an eight-light mullioned and transomed window on the ground floor. The inner faces feature a three-light stepped casement and a Caernarvon-arched boarded door with a hoodmould and carved stops.

The central gateway is made of Bath stone ashlar and features coupled Tuscan columns with banded rustication that support an entablature adorned with obelisks at either end and an open strapwork centerpiece. It has a central round arch with imposts, a keystone, circular panels in the spandrels, and two 20th-century wrought iron gates. There are low linking walls to the lodges that include a four-bay arcade and pedestrian entrances.

The flanking walls are quadrant walls approximately 20 meters long and 1 meter high, built from snecked rock-faced Pennant sandstone at the base, with an arcaded Bath stone ashlar balustrade above. Square piers with obelisk finials are positioned at intervals and at the ends.
