Description

The North Lodges to Raby Castle, along with the attached north quadrant wall and gates, were built in the 18th century by J. Carr. They are constructed from coursed squared sandstone, featuring a plinth, quoins, and ashlar dressings. The rear extension has a pantiled roof, while the main roof is not visible. The wall is also made of coursed squared sandstone, and the gates are crafted from wrought and cast iron, designed in a Gothic style.

These lodges are one storey high and consist of one bay, connected by pedestrian gateways to the gate piers. The embattled lodges have wide shuttered openings with flat stone sills and lintels, which are part of bowed full-height central projections. There are blind arrow loops in the narrow corner sections. A parapet band runs continuously with the flat coping of the walls, which contain segmental-headed pedestrian gateways with voussoirs. The square gate piers feature cross loops, although these are obscured by notice boards, and are topped with projecting embattled parapets.

The quadrant wall attached to the north lodge has gabled coping and ends at a stone stile for a public footpath. The pedestrian and vehicle gates have scroll-headed principals, with tied Gothic arcading in narrow panels, and a central horizontal panel adorned with a flower pattern. The uprights are square-sectioned and styled in a Jacobean manner. Some details were missing at the time of the survey. The rear of the lodges displays bowed projections similar to those at the front.
